When we sailed to Mazatlán for the eclipse we only knew one thing: it was going to be a good time 😎 What we DIDN’T know is that we were about to stay in an apartment-turned-party-pad and befriend some rad people that we look forward to seeing again soon 🤞This little recap reel doesn’t do the experience justice, so keep an eye out for upcoming blog posts and a YouTube video (eventually) 🌚

Our pals Charles and Nora (@singletack) were sweet enough to include us in their eclipse party, which entailed getting to stay in this ENTIRE apartment building full of their dear friends. The rooftop not only made an excellent eclipse view point, but also a sweet party pad to dance the night away. In addition to the landlubbers that flew in, we got to party with some salty folk as well, like the crews of Trouble, Small World, @sailingalegria, Island Fox, Cavu, @svliquid, Boomarang, and more ⛵️🪩 The parties were DJ’d by Mark from Liquid and our new friend @iamstarya (check out her music, you won’t regret it 💕)

If your friends ask you to take a Banda party boat

If your friends ask you to take a Banda party boat - say yes. Dancing, tacos, nasty cheap tequila (and good drinks too!) 💃🏻🇲🇽 #Banda is the music of the state of Sinaloa just like #Mariachi is the music of or beloved Jalisco. Generally, banda groups have an accordion, a tuba, a drum, and a trombone/trumpet/or saxophone. Sometimes a guitar. It’s loud. VERY loud. Think German Oompah and Polka bands (Banda started from them)… despite Banda’s significance, #Mazatlán finds itself in sort of a #Footloose situation 😅

Recently Banda music has been under criticism by tourists and vacation home owners for being “too loud” and “obnoxious” - Though live banda is not banned from the beaches, the city’s authority and community implemented new regulations to “compromise” with the tourism industry’s concerns, including excessive noise but it still seems like they are trying to silence the musicians overall. The musicians are hired by tourists; they don’t just play their instruments for pleasure, but as a way of life and survival. There have been many protests, discussions, and attempted resolutions to preserve this unique and FUN part of Mazatláns culture. If you’re interested in this topic, I urge you to research further, but one thing is for sure: we love dancing to Banda! ☺️

Marina El Cid Mazatlán has quite the reputation for being a gnarly harbor entrance. Not only is it narrow, but breaking swell can sometimes find its way around the break wall AND there is often dredging equiptment strung about 🫠 nerves were high as we made our approach at nightfall, but with the following weeks forecast it was in our best interest to get into the harbor and seek refuge in our slip reserved for the eclipse. Luckily, our pals @singletack were able to capture this gratiutous drone footage and we managed to pull it off with little to no swell or opposing channel traffic making our docking excecution easy peasy 🤗
